SINGLE REVIEW: Thompson Square “Testing The Water”

Arriving in Nashville the same week in 1996, Oklahoma native Keifer Thompson and Alabama native Shawna Mcllwain each came in pursuit of solo careers. It was love at first sight when they met as competitors in a singing competition.

Three years after meeting, they married. They were legally Mr. and Mrs., but still pursuing solo careers. Their careers took off once they married their vocals and Thompson Square was born.

Those harmonies have never been stronger than on their newest single, “Testing The Water” (a tune that will remind you of Little Big Town’s “Pontoon). From their second album, Just Feels Good, the song playfully showcases a loving couple, taking a leap of faith (or is a dive of faith since they’re testing the water?).

They’ve sung about taking chances together before – “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not was the most played song in 2011. Keifer remarked, “I think a lot of people have the same kind of memory: The first date, the first kiss. Everyone’s done that and that’s what radiated with everyone with that song, all those good memories.”

They are nominated for the 2014 ACM Vocal Duo of the Year and could well bring home the award for the third consecutive year. The 49th Annual ACM Awards airs on CBS this Sunday, 8PM ET/PT.

Look for the Stoney Creek Records song to impact radio on April 21.

“Down by the river, we’re testing the water

Tryin’ to cool off but it’s just getting hotter

Let’s take a little walk out on a limb

Close our eyes and jump in

If we’re gonna fall, let’s cannonball

Make a few waves and swim out a little bit

Farther in the holler

You and me baby, testing the water”
