After just a short break during their Happy Endings World Tour, Old Dominion took to the stage in Atlantic City, New Jersey for one of their final stops in the US before heading overseas. To a sold out crowd, the group performed countless songs off both of their records along with their newest single “Make It Sweet”.
As the lights went down, the excitement heightened. Old Dominion took their places kicking things off with a fan favorite “Song For Another Time” followed quickly by “Beer Can in a Truck Bed” and “Wrong Turns”. It was immediately apparent that as much music as possible was going to be played during that night, and not a minute would be wasted.
When I spotted the microphone stand as a permanent fixture at the end of the catwalk, I knew the guys would be keeping us on our toes. “Be With Me” was sung with meaning as they ran from left to right, down and up the stage, leaving no corner untouched, and no fan left out. They were singing to each of us, and we felt it.
Being at the new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, it was only fitting that “Hotel Key” was a crowd favorite. As I glanced around, hotel keys were being waved in the air, just as lighters, cell phones and sometimes even cowboy boots tend to do at country concerts. Old Dominion has found their signature move.
The show became even more intimate with an acoustic set of “Still Writing Songs About You” and “Stars in The City”, where they showcased their vibrant harmonies and brilliant songwriting.
The night continued with “ No Such Thing as a Broken Heart”, ”Written in the Sand” and the song they penned for Kenny Chesney, “Save It For A Rainy Day”.
Since no one was ready for the night to end, we held onto every note of the encore which consisted of “Shoe Shopping” and the song that started it all, “Break Up With Him”.
Throughout the night, the crowd sang the words back to every song. Whether it was a radio hit, or a deep cut on their record, we knew them all. Old Dominion performs with passion, they have fun, and it is clear the stage is where they are meant to be. Whether it be large or small, they will give it their all each and every time. It was a show to be remembered, not only because of the immense amount of energy, but also the talent that accompanied every person on that stage. Let the countdown begin for the next time that New Jersey gets a visit from Old Dominion.
