Jake Owen brought his indoor beach party to the North Charleston Coliseum on Saturday night 10/6/18. The Life’s Whatcha Make It Tour featured guests David Lee Murphy and Morgan Wallen.
Morgan Wallen was the first to hit the stage. He has opened for some of the biggest names in country music over the last year including Florida Georgia Line and Luke Bryan and he is certainly hitting his stride. Wallen exudes energy and his band is sounding tight. His set was shorter than I had hoped, but he got the crowd rocking and wanting more. Opening the show with “Whatcha Know ‘Bout That” and “The Way I Talk,” Wallen showed the crowd how hard he has been working. Sing-a-longs with “Happy Hour” and “Little Rain” proved Morgan is gaining fans in every town. My favorite part of the set was an unexpected mash up medley that contained some of the best rock songs ever made. His band started with the Linkin Park hit “In The End,” then moved to “Life In The Fast Lane,” “You Give Love A Bad Name,” “Use Somebody,” “Sugar We’re Goin Down,” and ended the sing along with “Pour Some Sugar On Me.” Morgan ended his set with his current single “Whiskey Glasses” before leading into his first number 1 hit “Up Down.” I, for one, cannot wait to see where Wallen’s career is going, but if this show was a sample, he is certainly heading in the right direction.
David Lee Murphy was the second act on the bill. I did not grow up listening to country music so I was not sure what to expect when the supporting acts were announced. I could not have been more wrong about Murphy. Sure, I knew he had some big hits back in the 90’s, but I did not realize how many current hits he had written for other artists. He sang the Jason Aldean hit “Big Green Tractor,” Thompson Squares “Are You Gonna Kiss Me Or Not,” Kenny Chesney’s “Pirate Flag” & “Living in Fast Forward,” all before wowing the crowd with his current come back hit “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” and ending his set with a blistering performance of “Dust on the Bottle.”
Jake Owen was next and took full advantage of the stage. He was all over the place; running and jumping all while barefoot. The production was amazing with a giant screen showing tropical images and videos. Jake played all the hits starting with “American Country Love Song” and “Anywhere With You.” Jakes new single “Down to the Honky Tonk” was a fun song, with images of Jake dressed up like Elvis on the big screen (if you have not seen the music video, make sure to check it out.) Jake did an amazing job of “Alone With You” and then segued into a great cover of the classic “Stand By Me.” Jake interacted with the crowd and even chased around a giant inflatable beach ball. The highlight of the night is when Jake plucked out audience members and gave them access to his Tiki section onstage which allowed audience members to watch the show from the stage. I hope to see other artists copy this in the future. What a way to watch a concert.
