Can you share a bit about the inspiration behind your single “17?”
I wrote 17 a few years ago right after I turned 17. I was going through a lot of changes in my life at the time, it was good and bad changes. I felt very overwhelmed by everything, so I literally just sat down and wrote everything I was feeling. Just like in the song, I wrote about how at 17 there are so many good things happening but also so many challenging things. How at that age you’re balancing almost being an adult, but you’re still a teenager. Even though that age can be rough, it also can be an amazing year. And that’s why I ended the song with “fall in love, just have fun, just be 17.” As I was writing “17”, I even taught myself to just live in the moment and enjoy your teenage years as they are.
What has been your favorite part of shooting your music videos? Do you have any behind-the-scenes stories to share?
My favorite part would probably be meeting new people. For my next song’s music video (“Your Loss”), so many people showed up to the location just to be a part of it. I got to meet so many locals and it just made me so happy that so many people wanted to be involved. During the video shoot, we actually got rained out and we had to delay filming. I got so nervous that everyone was gonna start leaving, but everyone stayed for hours in the rain. I couldn’t even describe how grateful I was when they all stayed.
Can you tell us about a musical figure that has significantly influenced your sound?
I don’t feel like only one music figure has influenced my sound. I think my sound is influenced by a lot of artists, but if I had to pick a couple I would say my sound is a
mix of Dolly Parton and Gretchen Wilson.
How does your hometown or background influence your sound or lyrics? I grew up in a very small town in southwestern Pennsylvania, I describe it almost like the redneck part of Pennsylvania. Growing up there definitely influenced my sound. I was always listening to Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood, Dolly Parton, Gretchen Wilson, Hank Williams Jr, and so many more classic country artists. My background, though, is a very honest family. My parents didn’t hide anything from me, they didn’t sugarcoat anything, and always told me how it was. So because of them I’m a very straight forward, honest person, which I feel like really represents how I write my lyrics.
If you could open a show for any artist, who would it be and why?Right now I would probably say Lainey Wilson because I love her music and she just seems like a genuinely great person. And if I had the chance to sing with her I feel like our voices would go very well together.
What is your bucket list venue to play?
Definitely the Grand Ole Opry.
What’s your favorite part about performing live?
Seeing people enjoy my music. Whether it’s my original songs or covers, I love watching people relate to the songs I’m singing and watching them feel something.
Do you have any pre-show or post-show rituals?
Always before a show I get in my “zone”. Which usually means me not talking to anyone because I don’t want anyone else to get into my head before I go on stage. Before and after my show, you will always see me with a travel mug drinking throat coat tea.
Are there any particular milestones you’re aiming to achieve in the next few years?
I would love to release an album in the next few years. And I would also love the chance to go on tour and open for someone in the next few years.
You have new music coming up – what can you tell us about what’s to come for the rest of the year?
I have a few more songs coming out this year! My next one is coming out on August 23! It’s called “Your Loss” and I am very excited for it! There’s also a music video to join that song. I feel like “17” introduced the kind of writer I am, but the next couple songs are really going to show what kind of artist I am.
