Hey Adam, thank you for taking the time to chat with us! How have the last few months been treating you?
The last few months have been awesome, it’s been so good to be back in the studio making music. No complaints over here!!
You released your single “Disco Cowboy” in 2022 – what is your decision process when it comes to releasing a new song – how do you decide when and which to release?
I always say being an independent artist is a double-edged sword, obviously the downside is paying for everything on your own and trying to figure out this industry and navigate it without any inside help, but I think I’m finally getting a grasp on that part with the help of an incredible team of people who are passionate about what I’m doing. That being said, the glory of being independent is that at the end of the day, I get to make the calls on which songs make the album and which songs become singles. I get to have the creative freedom to put together an album that authentically tells my story, and I don’t take that for granted. In the case of Disco Cowboy, I knew the moment AJ Smith and I wrote it that it would not only be the lead single from the project, but that the title embodied exactly where I am in my career, and it had to be the name of the album as well.
You’ve also got a music video for the song. Did you take a lot of creative control over the look of the video?
I can not pretend that I did this all on my own because without my videographer/co-director Robby Stevens the video would not be what it is. However, I will take pride in the fact that I put a lot of hard work and thought into this video. From costumes, to choreography, to storyboarding, I pretty much made every creative decision, and it’s so incredible to see how all of that hard work came together in such a beautiful way.
What message do you hope listeners and viewers of “Disco Cowboy” will take away from the song and video?
I honestly hope this song can find common ground for folks who may not always see eye to eye. I hope that common ground is live and let live, we are all doing the best we can, so let’s just put on a funky bass line and shake our asses okay??? Cheers!
When writing, where does the inspiration come from and how quickly do the songs form from there?
I love writing songs, I love the whole process. I love the magic of it all, how an idea or inspiration can seemingly fall from the heavens and when you catch it, there’s nothing else in the world like it. When inspiration like that hits, I’m just along for the ride. Sometimes the entire song comes together in 30 minutes. Sometimes I write a verse and chorus and then immediately take it into the studio to collaborate with someone on it. I think every song is different in the way it comes to be, and I love that about songwriting.
Was there a specific moment or event that inspired “Disco Cowboy”?
Well, frankly I have a terrible memory, so I can’t even remember where the title came from, but I had just those two words written down in my phone, with no idea where it was headed but I knew that idea resonated so hard with who I see myself as. Once I got in the studio with AJ Smith and he played that opening bass line, the story kind of wrote itself.
What was the inspiration behind your single, “Take Myself Home” ?
It was my first session with my now friends, Mary Beth and Josh Sudduth, and from the jump we knew we wanted to write a self-love anthem. To me this song embodies what it means to show up for yourself. To be enough all on your own. I took a page from RuPaul on this one, “if you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gunna love anyone else???”
Tell us about the video concept – do you have any fun memories or behind-the-scenes secrets you can share from the shoot?
That was such a fun day!! We actually shot the video on my 33rd birthday! It was the best way to guilt-trip my friends into being in a music video!! We shot it at my favorite bar in town, The Lipstick Lounge, which is one of the last remaining lesbian bars in America!! It’s been my home bar and has seen me grow up the past 10 years so it only felt right to shoot the video there!
What can fans expect in 2023?
I am just finishing up my album as we speak! I’m so excited to announce this project, we’ve been working on for almost 2 years. I’ve really worked hard on it, it’s been a true labor of love, and I hope everyone dances to it all summer long!!!!
Keep up with Adam!
