Rising country starlet Carolyn Miller is releasing her new single “What You Can’t Have” this Friday, and we have the exclusive premiere! Take a listen to the empowering track penned by No. 1 songwriters for Kelsea Ballerini and Brett Young below.
Carolyn hails from New York City, where she is no stranger to selling out venues, and even recently performed with Smithfield and Chase Rice. The NSAI artist to watch was also named a NASH-FM Nash Next finalist, and her debut EP Unbreakable also reached the Top 7 on the iTunes Pre-Order Country Chart.
We got to chat with Carolyn, and you can check out our conversation below. Be sure to download and stream “What You Can’t Have” and follow along with Carolyn as she heads on the road this summer!
1. What is the inspiration behind “What You Can’t Have”?
Although I write a ton and perform a lot of my own material, this song was actually written by Lance Carpenter, Forest Glen Whitehead, and Jesse Lee (all of whom have written #1 hits for Kelsea Ballerini, Brett Young, etc). Lance is a good friend of mine and when we were hanging out one day, he said, “Hey, I have a song I think you might love” and played it for me. Within the first 15 seconds, I was sold! I just knew in my gut that I had to cut it before he even played through the first chorus.
2. What made you want to cut this song when you heard it?
I think it has a great message of confidence and self-empowerment while simultaneously being a fun jam. It totally reminded me of a college flame who came back around a little too late. It felt good to have the strength and confidence at the time to say “thanks, but no thanks” and move on.
3. What are you looking forward to with this latest chapter in your music?
This is the first time I’m releasing new music since my debut EP, Unbreakable, came out last summer. A lot has happened since then so I’m excited to have this next chapter officially kick off with the release of “What You Can’t Have.” I’m looking forward to bigger shows, connecting with more fans, and continuing to refine and hone in on my sound/style with every song I write or release.
4. What do you hope fans take away from the track?
I’m a big believer in knowing your self-worth. This song, in particular, says you can’t have your cake and eat it too – if you didn’t know what you had when you had it, then you don’t deserve it now. YOU are special, unique, important and if he/she couldn’t see that then, it’s their loss! The right one will come along who won’t need to lose you first 🙂
5. What else can fans look forward to this year?
Lots of shows and new music! I’m opening for major label artists now, most recently Chase Rice – hopefully will have more dates with other artists to announce soon! Also planning to release a few more singles this year and continue putting out new music. Some fun performances coming up in New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Nashville, and more.
