You shouldn’t have… One phrase. Two meanings.
Cale Dodds released his brand new single, “You Shouldn’t Have,” today. [4.23.21] The catchy track was co-written by Dodds, Chase Rice, Hunter Phelps, and Smith Ahnquist. I personally have been anxiously awaiting new music, and he did not disappoint with this release.
The song is written for an ex who wants him back. He’s moved on, and now she’s jealous that he’s out with someone new. She’s “hitting up his friends” to see where he’s at… His response? You shouldn’t have.
“If you’re here thinking that, we’re gonna get it back, girl that’s a feelin’ that, you shouldn’t have, you shouldn’t have broken up with me.”
In true Dodds fashion, it’s the play on words that he tends to do so well. Listen to his songs “Lying” or “Give it Back” for further proof. I love how “you shouldn’t have” has two totally different meanings in the very same line. You shouldn’t be thinking that, and you shouldn’t have done that… As I said, it’s catchy. It’s hard to sit still while it’s playing (on repeat.) It’s a different sound than Dodds’ fans are used to, but it’s a great new chapter for the Georgia born singer. You can catch Dodds tonight as he opens for Chase Rice at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. In person tickets are sold out, but you can grab a virtual ticket here.
