ARTIST FEATURE: Badland Sons

If you are like me, currently working from home and hating the quiet, you’ve probably had Spotify or some type of streaming platform on at all times. While listening, a song I’ve never heard before “Exes” by Badland Sons came on, and I was blown away. I instantly started searching for more music and trying to figure out who they were. The band is formed by Brandon Ray, Luke Buishas, and Ryan Tant. “Exes” is the band’s most recent single, released February 28th.

On Instagram, the band posted a caption that said, “The song that started Badland Sons, here’s how Exes happened… I (Brandon Ray) had just gotten back from a long weekend opening for Chase Rice when I pulled into Nashville on a Monday morning straight to Corn Man Publishing to write with my good buddies and phenomenal songwriters Will Weatherly and Jordan Minton. We kicked around a couple ideas over coffee and before we knew it, we landed on Exes. Instead of writing a “get over you” song, we wanted to do the opposite. We wrote a “get back together” song highlighting the honesty of how difficult it is to stay broken up with someone when you know you’re supposed to be together. When one of us spit out the line “baby keep your hands on me til we ain’t exes anymore” that was the moment we knew we had something special. But that’s only half the story. I was kicking around the idea of starting a band with Luke Buishas and Ryan Tant one night when I played them this song. That weekend we played it at a show opening for Jon Pardi – right after we came off, Jon said “damn I dig that Exes tune!” It was the start of a sound. A vibe. An attitude. It was the start of Badland Sons.”
