If you’ve been following me for awhile, you’ve probably learned that my all-time favorite artist (besides Eric Church, of course) is Andy Velo. I’ve been following Andy since 2012, known as one of his original fans, but it wasn’t until 2015 that I got to catch a live show when he left me two tickets at will call for his first show in Charleston. After the show, Andy let me listen to the summer anthem he planned to release a few months later: “Wake Up, Boat, Drink, Repeat.” Two years later, he has released a music video for the song.
Back in May, Andy announced on his Facebook page that he would be shooting a music video for Wake Up, Boat, Drink, Repeat down in Florida at Juana’s Pagodas and needed extras. I was dying to be there but just couldn’t swing it with my work schedule. Instead, I lived it through social media. It was exciting to see Cat Country 98.7 putting Andy on the air and playing host for the music video shoot. You see, I’ve been trying to get Andy played on the radio for 5 years and I can’t help but smile from ear to ear when I hear about a DJ spinning his music. Days before his video would get picked up by GAC for its official premiere, Andy shared it with me.
Waking up on the beach sporting a ball cap from The Gin in Tifton, GA, pops the top off an ice cold beer and wakes up his sleeping buddies for another fun day under the summer sun. Boarding a pontoon, leaving one napper behind in the dunes, the boys set off on the water to party with many other boaters. Don’t miss Andy’s dance moves! The boys find a flyer in the water promoting Andy’s show at Juana’s Pagodas, realizing they’re running close to showtime. Too bad that pontoon is built for cruising, and only for floating when you run out of gas! Saved by a boat named Happy Ours they make it to land just in time, with their napping friend not far behind on a jet ski driven by the Cat Country mascot. The song finishes out performed on the beach. My imagination is going to go ahead and consider Groundhog Day, hoping that the storyboard plays over again every day.
Music videos excite me. I spend so many hours each day listening to music and brainstorming a storyboard of how the music video of a song should be. I die a little inside every time an artist takes a song with a great or funny storyline and uses tour footage to throw together a music video. So I’m really glad Andy took the time to put together a hilarious video and thought to include his fans. Hats off to you, my friend! And for those of you reading… Watch the video! Pick up “Wake Up, Boat, Drink, Repeat” on iTunes. Find a friend with a boat. Go to where the map turns blue. Live the motto!
